Were you aware that the majority of the beauty industry is unregulated. This means that it’s possible for anyone to work as a beauty therapist, open salons and perform treatments on the public without obtaining any training, a single qualification or having appropriate insurance.
A recent survey carried out by British Association of Beauty Therapy & Cosmetology (BABTAC) has revealed that 1 in 3 people don’t know whether or not their beauty therapist is insured or even appropriately trained.
Beware of rogue traders.
If you aren’t aware of how unregulated the industry is, you might not have given consideration to the implications of getting a treatment from an uninsured and / or unqualified therapist. Naively we assume that they are qualified and insured because they have a business. So when you pop to get your wax, facial, brows & lashes or even nails sorted, there’s no real regulation in place to protect you from uninsured and/or unqualified technicians. You might not think it’s such an issue and you might have so far been fortunate enough not to have had anything go wrong however, the implications if something did go wrong could be severe.
Not using qualified and insured beauty industry professionals potentially leads us into circumstances where we aren’t getting the level of expertise or care we expect when receiving the treatments. Or worse, we find ourselves in a situation where something goes wrong and has caused physical and/or mental harm, with no recompense.
By now most of us will have heard some horror stories about treatments going wrong, and no, there’s not enough regulation, however, there is some. Botox, for example. The current laws say that Botox can only be prescribed by a doctor or a nurse, which is reassuring. Unfortunately for other injectables such as filler, the regulation there is pretty much non-existent. The filler itself can be bought online and administered by anyone and that is shockingly legal currently, which is massively concerning.
